Sports Podiatrist

While exercise is obviously very important, unfortunately it can come with the risk of injury. Whether you are a runner, play basketball or another sport, or do anything else that requires you to exert your legs, an injury such as a strain, sprain or stress fracture can happen fairly easily. A sports podiatry expert with Southwest Foot and Ankle Center can provide the treatment you need so that you can get back in the game as quickly as possible.

Running Injuries

One of the most common reasons active people need sports podiatry treatment is due to a running injury. The more you run, the higher your risk for a wide range of injuries. These can range from mild annoyances to serious problems that will require either physical therapy or possibly even surgery. Here are just some of the typical running injuries we treat.

  • Achilles Tendonitis – This is usually characterized by intense pain in the area behind the ankle. If this problem is not treated promptly and effectively, you may be at an increased risk of a rupture of the Achilles tendon.
  • Plantar FasciitisThe plantar fascia is the thick ligament that runs along the bottom of the foot. When it becomes inflamed, it usually causes severe pain in the heel. It can become extremely difficult to even walk if this problem occurs.
  • Arch Strain – This problem is also the result of inflammation and leads to a burning sensation under the arch.

Sprains and Strains

Sprains and strains are also quite common. A sprain is the result of a ligament stretching or tearing, usually because of some type of trauma that can either dislocate or rupture a joint. Symptoms include bruising, swelling, pain and inflammation.

Strains typically affect tendons, which are cords of tissue that connect bone to muscle. A chronic strain could occur due to repetitive activity or not taking breaks during intense exercise. Cramping, muscle spasms, muscle weakness and swelling are some of the more common symptoms.
